PAUCARTAMBO THE FESTIVAL OF THE VIRGIN OF CARMEN AND TRES CRUCES(THE SECOND WEEK 15-16TH JULY.

Legend says that in colonial times the “qollas” of the high plains came dwon to the valleys of Paucartambo on mule back to exchange their products.On one occasion they carried the bust of the Virgin de Carmen with them.When the moment to leave arrived,the beast that carried the image refused to walk,either because of its celebrated stubbornnes or because of a divine plan.The divinity still remains in Paucartambo. Since the Virgin is venerated and a festival is celebrated in her honor .However, since 1960 the festival has taken on greater importance.Year after year,in the middle of July,from faraway villages and communities of Cuscoarrive to Paucartambo dance groups with their own orquestras that are contracted by the “mayordomos”that had been chosen the previous year commited to paying all the cost involved .There have to be nearly twenty “mayordomos”,each with their respective dance groups ,all of them different .The mayordomos in return “jurcan”their godfathers and friends,have them promise to be in charge of the food,drink and other necessities ,that will be consumed by the guests during the four day festival.
Tres Cruces gives a wonderful view of the strange optical conditions. At a height of 3600 m over the Manu Biosphere seeing three suns, haoles and magical rays of light.
